A three-market by two-time-window observation board with separate document samples and visibly empty cells

Define what each observation represents

For an authorized catalog-monitoring project, a useful unit is one specified page, in one approved market, within one time window, under a defined browser and account context. An exit IP is a transport attribute, not a consumer or a surveyed household. Multiple exits viewing the same page do not turn a convenience collection into a representative population survey.

The practical problem is often hidden in scheduling: one market responds quickly, another has missing results, and the summary pools whatever arrived. The output then reflects collection opportunities as well as market differences. This guide proposes a small observation matrix that preserves the original collection plan. It provides a workflow, not measured traffic, success rates or statistical confidence claims.

1. Specify the comparison before selecting routes

Write down the question: for example, which approved catalog pages display a particular offer in each market during the chosen window? Specify the same product identifiers and page families, language, device profile, consent state and authorized account state. Keep currency, taxes, shipping and eligibility separate if interpreting offers; a displayed label alone is not a normalized final purchase price.

Set market and window membership before launching. For an illustrative owned-site fixture, three markets, two windows and two pages create twelve planned cells. This number describes a test design, not a production result or an appropriate sample size for every research question. Assign one expected observation per cell and define what makes its business content valid.

2. Allocate work to cells, not to whichever route is fastest

Give each cell a task identifier containing market, window and page identity. Interleave markets within a window, using the same page order rule or a recorded randomization rule. Bound attempts and concurrency by the approved site's limits. Fast completion in one market must not generate extra cells that replace uncompleted work elsewhere.

Record actual start and finish timestamps with time zones. If markets cannot be observed within the planned window, mark the affected cells out of window or missing rather than quietly moving them. When a local-time schedule is needed, explicitly define the zone and conversion; regional routing does not set the worker's clock.

3. Validate the returned variant before admitting the cell

Record requested market, observed route evidence, actual final URL, displayed language, and meaningful fixture fields. Verify the returned page against the documented market context. A 200 containing login, consent or an error layout is not a valid catalog observation. A page with no offer is a valid absence only after confirming that the expected page and observation conditions were reached.

Separate states such as valid_present, valid_absent, wrong_variant, transport_failed and not_attempted. Keep an evidence reference and reason code. The distinction prevents a network failure from appearing as a market with zero availability. If the target cannot expose a trustworthy market marker, retain that uncertainty rather than labeling the sample as verified.

4. Keep retries inside the original observation

Attach every bounded retry to the original cell, with its attempt number and timestamps. A retry can complete that cell if its time and context still qualify; it is not another independent observation. Do not replace an unavailable market with an easy market or claim that a later successful page was observed earlier.

Deduplicate by the intended observation identity, not by IP alone. Conversely, do not collapse two planned time windows merely because they used the same exit. Log repeated snapshots so the report can distinguish planned observations from duplicate deliveries. Pause on access denials and comply with target limits; route rotation must not be used to defeat a refusal.

5. Report coverage before aggregating business results

For each market and window, show planned cells, valid cells, missing cells and wrong-variant cells, plus the actual collection interval. If the question compares the same pages across markets, use the matched valid subset and state which cells were excluded. Preserve the full coverage table alongside it so exclusion does not hide an operational gap.

In an illustrative fixture with two planned pages per market-window cell, one valid page and one transport failure means one of two planned page observations is valid. It does not mean the second offer is absent. Prefer market-level results with explicit denominators; do not publish a single combined average when its changing regional composition obscures the comparison.

Any weighting must come from a documented research objective and justified external population or business information, not from available IP counts or successful-request proportions. This matrix alone cannot establish national demand, consumer preferences, market share or population representativeness.

6. Acceptance-test the report using owned fixtures

Create controlled pages with known present and absent offers. Deliberately make one regional fixture return an error, one return the wrong language, and one retry succeed outside its window. Check that all three remain distinguishable in the exported report. Also replay a duplicate delivery and confirm it cannot increase the valid-cell count.

Accept the workflow when the original plan remains unchanged, content states match the fixtures, retries remain attached to cells, time-window exceptions are explicit, and the final denominator can be reconstructed from the evidence. Choose rollout volume after this test and after checking account and target constraints, rather than assigning an unsupported universal sample threshold.

Where 98IP fits

The 98IP market research use case provides context for regional observation. Use dynamic residential IP when your approved matrix calls for selected residential market routes, configure only options available in the account, and confirm the observed route for each task.

The product supplies routing; it does not choose research denominators, certify population samples or guarantee a target's response. Track actual account usage separately from valid observation counts. Neither a larger IP pool nor more retries by itself proves better research quality or a specific cost saving.

FAQ and operating checklist

Should every new IP count as a new sample? No. Define the unit around the intended page-market-window observation and its context. Do not count transport identities as people.

Can a missing cell be filled tomorrow? Only as a separately labeled later observation, or within a prospectively amended plan. Keep the original gap visible.

Before releasing a report: freeze the question and matrix; keep observation context comparable; verify variants; retain timestamps and time zones; separate absence from failure; deduplicate deliveries; expose coverage denominators; explain matched exclusions; and avoid population claims not supported by the study design.

Collect only owned or explicitly authorized public information within the agreed scope. Honor site rules and rate limits, minimize personal data, sanitize evidence, and set a retention period. Do not use proxy access to manufacture survey participants, votes, reviews or consumer behavior.
