A storefront can select the correct market and currency yet display an amount with the wrong precision. A tiny nonzero amount can look free, a decimal shift can change its apparent value, or a rounded label can be read back into application state. A regional proxy helps reproduce the page path; it does not decide the monetary rule.
This guide is a proposed display-rounding acceptance test for an owned or authorized staging storefront. It does not recommend exchange rates, tax policies or payment rounding. Use the merchant's approved rules and synthetic non-binding quotes, without creating orders.
1. Separate canonical value from display policy
Before testing, record the currency code, canonical amount and its unit, quote version, locale, display precision, rounding rule and the stage where rounding applies. If the API sends integer minor units, retain the documented scale. If it sends a decimal string, preserve it without an unreviewed floating-point conversion.
Do not assume every currency has two decimal places or that the IP country determines the currency. MDN's Intl.NumberFormat examples show locale-aware currency formatting and a yen example without minor-unit decimals. The site's contract remains the source of the amount and required presentation.
A formatter is not a foreign-exchange engine. Keep conversion, business arithmetic and display rounding as separate steps. A missing currency or scale makes the case inconclusive, not a reason to guess from a symbol.
2. Prepare an independent expected-result fixture
- Obtain a small approved fixture table from the product or pricing owner, with exact input values and expected displayed outcomes.
- Include supported zero-decimal and fractional-decimal policies rather than inventing currencies the application does not support.
- Include zero, the smallest supported nonzero amount, a value just below a rounding boundary, the boundary itself and a value just above it.
- Add a carry case near an integer boundary and a permitted negative adjustment if the product supports one.
- Write expected currency, sign, precision and rounded amount before running the browser.
Do not generate the expected table by calling the same formatter with the same configuration as the page. That only compares the implementation with itself. Have the owner approve midpoint behavior and whether a tiny nonzero value needs explanatory text when its rounded display is zero.
Keep the scope realistic: a canonical integer-minor-unit API cannot represent every hypothetical sub-minor input. Use finer-scale values only where the application's documented calculation or quote model permits them.
3. Hold route and market state steady
Use a clean authorized browser profile and a verified regional route. Record market selector, locale, currency and quote ID separately. Hold product, quantity, discounts and synthetic delivery inputs fixed; do not interpret a changed quote as a pure formatting effect.
Load one fixture, wait for its matching quote version to finish rendering and record the canonical response alongside visible text. Compare the approved numeric outcome first, then symbol placement, separators and spacing. Preserve meaningful Unicode signs and separators; removing all punctuation can conceal a decimal shift.
MDN documents formatToParts for structured formatting output and resolvedOptions for effective settings. Where the application exposes them, these can help inspect a formatter's chosen configuration. They do not replace the independent fixture or prove every visible component used that formatter.
4. Check precision, carry and semantic labels
For each fixture, verify the currency code, sign, number of fraction digits and rounded value. A trailing zero may be required presentation, not redundant data. Test the configured policy rather than insisting that every market use the same label.
Check a rounding carry across a whole-number boundary and a permitted negative adjustment. If the approved display yields zero from a nonzero input, verify the product's explicit explanatory treatment; do not silently replace the business amount with zero or advertise it as free.
For item and total displays, obtain the declared calculation sequence. Rounding each item and then summing may differ from summing precise items and rounding once. Do not choose whichever total looks convenient or invent a tax rule to explain the difference.
5. Prove display does not overwrite source state
Switch between two supported locales while holding the same currency and quote version. The canonical amount should remain unchanged when only presentation changes. Then change currency only through the documented quote flow, obtaining a new quote if required; do not relabel an old amount with a new code.
Inspect authorized application state or the next non-binding quote request to confirm it uses canonical values, not a number parsed from the formatted label. A comma, grouping space or rounded decimal is an unsafe substitute for the exact source record.
If the quote expires, reload a new fixture and mark the previous comparison incomplete. If source values differ across routes, investigate quote selection first. More screenshots cannot establish rounding correctness without a stable input.
6. Run a small regional acceptance matrix
The 98IP dynamic residential IP page is relevant when choosing access for authorized storefront localization checks. Verify current access options through the API configuration page. Regional access cannot guarantee a site selects a particular locale or currency; inspect those application inputs independently.
- Valid control: approved currency, scale and normal amount.
- Precision policy: each supported fixture has the declared fraction digits.
- Boundary trio: below, at and above the midpoint match the approved rule.
- Carry or negative case: signs and integer transitions match the fixture.
- Tiny amount: zero-looking presentation follows the explicit label policy.
- Locale switch: display changes without mutating canonical quote state.
These are unexecuted cases. Record route label, browser build, market, locale, currency, quote version, exact amount and scale, expected result, actual text and first mismatch. Use only synthetic records, redact secrets and stop before order or payment submission.
FAQ and release checklist
Does correct currency prove rounding is correct? No. Currency identity and presentation precision are separate checks.
Should the screenshot become the arithmetic source? No. Retain the exact canonical record and use the display as evidence only.
- Amount unit and scale are explicit.
- An independent fixture defines midpoint and tiny-value behavior.
- Every comparison uses the matching quote version.
- Precision, carry, signs and labels are checked.
- Locale-only changes preserve canonical state.
- Supported synthetic cases are used without transactions or untested performance claims.
